Yahoo Groups is one of the many internet applications offered by Yahoo. Yahoo was created in January of 1994 by Jerry Yang and David Filo. At the time, it was named David and Jerry’s Guide to the World Wide Web. The site consisted of a directory of other websites that were organized using a hierarchy. The name Yahoo was applied in April of 1994, with the domain officially created on January 18th, 1995. The following decade saw Yahoo blossom into one of the most popular search engines on the web. In 2008, Microsoft attempted to buy out Yahoo but the bid was rejected.
The idea of a group is really nothing new. Many websites offer users a way to form a group and connect with others. However, most are limited to a specific topic for each group. Yahoo Groups gives users total freedom to choose their desired topic. Yahoo Groups is also unique in its size. Since Yahoo is one of the most well known search engines, it draws in many people who make it easier to build a substantial group of members to participate in discussions, share photographs and participate in polls.
The Yahoo Groups website features the iconic Yahoo logo and images of small groups of people having a good time. The homepage is well organized, although a little busy because of the man icons, features, and occasional advertisement thrown into the mix. It doesn’t take long to learn how to navigate and the main tools needed to form or find groups are prominently displayed.
Users that wish to form or join a Yahoo Group must have a Yahoo account. This account gives the user access to all other Yahoo internet applications such as email. The user can begin by clicking the “Sign Up” link found along the bottom of the green header on the homepage. This takes the user to the Yahoo account registration form. The form asks for a first and last name, gender, date of birth, country location and postal code. The ID and password section asks the user for their preferred Yahoo ID and email as well as a password. An alternate email address and two security questions and answers are requested in case the user forgets or lose their password.
Yahoo offers its applications to users at no charge. The same goes for Yahoo Groups. Anyone can create an account and start joining or building their own online groups without paying a dime. In reality, the services offered are very basic and nothing that couldn’t be done with any popular social networking website. In order to justify a subscription fee, more services would need to be added or uses would likely go elsewhere. Yahoo has priced its group application just right, giving anyone and everyone free access.
Yahoo Groups is ideal for anyone that has a need to form a group. Organizations can keep members in the know or a group of friends can stay in touch online. Users can also get to know people they otherwise would have never met, who share the same interests. It’s a great place to spend some free time or keep a group of people up to date.
